The Australian Mist is the first cat to have originated entirely in Australia. This home-grown Aussie cat breed was formerly known as the Spotted Mist and have predominantly evolved from a Burmese background, with Abyssinian and domestic short hair in the mix.

The Australian Mist is a medium-sized cat of nicely balanced proportions without any extremes. Their eyes are primarily green and expressively large. Their coat is short but it is dense and soft like that of a Burmese. Due to their short coat, they don’t need much maintenance. A quick brush once a week will be sufficient. Their coat comes in a couple of patterns including spotted or marbled and in seven colours: gold, lilac, chocolate, blue, brown and peach. They normally weigh between 4kgs for females and up to 7kgs for males.

Blessed with the loving personality of the Burmese, the resilience of the Maggie and the cheerfulness of the Abyssinian, The Australian Mist reflects the best of their mixed ancestry combined with their own unique charms. Unlike other cat breeds, they are not shy and are very curious and friendly towards guests. Therefore, they will welcome and greet your guests at the door! This feline gets along with everyone, even the youngest of children. They enjoy playing games and being part of the hustle and bustle of a busy household so they will make a great companion to you and your kids. They have the tendency to crawl into the nearest lap with or without invitation and to constantly hang around to see what you are up to.

As with most breeds, Australian Mists have specific health concerns that owners need to be mindful of. They are prone to gingivitis; therefore it is highly important that you maintain their dental hygiene. This can include a good quality dry food or dental diet, dental chews or even brushing their teeth regularly. Regular veterinary dental check-ups are a good idea for Australian Mists. If your pet needs a dental check-up, cleaning or further treatment, book a consult with a mobile vet in Melbourne from Vets on Call and we’ll come to you for only $88. Your pet may even get excited to see the vet, especially when we carry treats!
