Just like humans our pets need to maintain an optimal weight to remain healthy. The most common weight issue that our vets see is an animal being overweight, this can bring about numerous health issues that can shorten your pet’s life. It can be one of the hardest things for some pet owners, to not overfeed, especially when those big brown eyes are looking up at you hopefully. Indulging them too much can lead to serious health concerns such as:

  • Arthritis
  • Increased chance of Musculoskeletal injuries such as cruciate ligament and hip and spinal injuries
  • Exacerbate breathing issues, particularly in short snout dogs and cats
  • Diabetes
  • Cats are also more likely to develop bladder conditions such as UTI’s and blocked bladders
  • Arthritis, musculoskeletal injuries, crucial ligament, hip injuries, spinal problems, exacerbate breathing issues particularly in short nose breeds, diabetes
  • Cats: Bladder issues like UTI's and blocked bladder, diabetes, arthritis
Weight and Nutrition Services

Nutrition can be confusing, especially with the conflicting branding messages from the numerous pet food companies, but in terms of controlling weight there is nothing more important than feeding your pet the right food and more importantly the right amount of food. The nutritional requirements of your pet will change throughout their life. For example, puppies and kittens will require more fat and protein content to assist with growth but an elderly pet will not require such high amounts of protein or fat. Our vets can work with you to develop the most appropriate diet or supplementation and the quantity of food for your pet throughout their life to ensure that they are getting the nutrition they need without over indulging them and putting them at more risk.

Many pets will develop an allergy to some foods throughout their lives. The most common being to beef and chicken, these can have many symptoms from itchiness to vomiting. If you notice your pet showing strange symptoms after eating our vets are able to work with you to identify the allergy and subsequently remove it from the diet.
